If you’re trying to plan an unforgettable and unique party with your friends and family, then try planning a party on a boat.

That’s all.

Nothing compares to a bit of fun and relaxation on the water, especially if it’s done the right way. And the good thing is, it’s not hard to organise a boat party. Just rent a boat, bring your friends and that’s it !

While we want to have a fun-filled, memorable experience, it’s also important to be safe in a boat party.

Following are 5 safety tips which can help you host a safe boat party.

  1. Be Weather-Wise

Make sure you always check the local weather before setting off.

Radio forecasts and TV are a helpful source of information regarding the weather.

If you notice any darkening clouds, sudden drops in temperature, or rough and volatile changing winds, it is better to get off the water.

It is important to remember that weather conditions can change rapidly, even if it’s pleasant and clear when you set sail. Remember to bring a radio and be on the alert for any changing weather conditions when you’re on the water.

  1. Always use common sense

One of the most crucial parts of ensuring safety in a boat party is to use common sense. Make sure you operate at a safe speed, particularly in crowded areas, are aware of your surroundings, and most importantly, steer clear your vessel.

Always remember to check the monitor gauges present at the helm (fuel, voltage, temperature), as their primary purpose is to ensure safe operation and identify and spot any issues that might occur.

Moreover, try keeping your movements gradual and slow, avoiding any sudden turns or accelerating.

Also, avoid diving and jumping in, especially at night.

It is not advisable to swim at night, primarily because there are no other swimmers or lifeguards who can see and help you, should you need help.

Even if you’re familiar with the particular area, you would not be able to see things you would ordinarily avoid like an extremely shallow patch of water, or wildlife and rocks just below the surface.

  1. Make sure to bring life jackets

The most important thing to ensure your safety on a party boat and in water is to wear a life jacket.

In fact, the U.S. Coast Guard states that life jackets can save the lives of hundreds of people each year.

Because the numbers are quite surprising.

They estimated that life jackets could have saved more than 80 percent of boating fatality victims.

Thus, make sure that all your family and friends have life jackets which fit correctly. Furthermore, modern life jackets are flexible, compact, and thin, so there really is no excuse not to store and wear a life jacket.

  1. Make a pre-departure checklist

To ensure that all your friends and family stay safe on a catamaran or any other party boat, make sure you equip your boat with the proper equipment before going on the water.

A pre-departure checklist is a perfect way to ensure that you haven’t forgotten any boating precautions. The boating safety checklist should include:

  • Sound producing devices like a whistle
  • Fuel and oil
  • Weather forecast
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First-aid kit
  • Tools and spares
  • Docking and anchoring tips
  • Additional clothing including a hat, warm clothes, and foul weather gear
  • Personal items including medicines, sunglasses, and sunscreen
