What a fantastic adventure we had with Clara and L’Etoile! We had the pleasure of sailing 10 days with l’Etoile, experiencing Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora from the deck. Our Skipper, Clara, was such a pleasure to sail with. She went above and beyond to meet our wishes, booked all the sights and restaurants/roulottes we decided to go for, and took us to and from the shore whenever needed. On top of that, she was so lovely with our kids that continue to talk about her and all the things they did with her. She also taught us some sailing and included us in all the maneuvers and sail hoistings that are necessary on a sailing boat. We had a fantastic time on Clara’s boat and would recommend anyone that wants to try real sailing in French Polynesia to go with L’Etoile.

We really enjoyed the whole trip. At first, I was a bit worried about what it would be like sailing with the owner of the boat—whether we’d get along, etc. But it turned out to be perfect. Hakim was very patient and dedicated, and a big advantage was that he showed us amazing places since he knows this area perfectly. It was much easier than trying to discover everything on our own. He also arranged things like scooter rentals for us on the islands. I highly recommend it to everyone—and Hakim, thanks again.

The team at Sunsail were exceptional. Everything was very well organised and the boat in excellent condition. There were a few small issues with the boat, but the land team led by Sophie were fantastic. We really enjoyed the sailing in the area and we are sad to leave.

Bora Bora is inevitable but only owes it to its lagoon. Tahaa and its wonders was one of our favorite places with the manta ray washing station, its pearl grove and its vanilla plantations a joy.
Bora Bora est un inévitable mais ne le doit qu'a son lagon. Tahaa et ses merveilles a été un de nos lieux préférés avec la station de lavage des raies manta, sa perleraie et ses vanillerais un bonheur.

Sailboat charter in French Polynesia

The incredible French Polynesia is a popular sailing destination in the South Pacific, offering an unforgettable sailing vacation through clear waters and coral reefs. This tropical paradise provides access to remote islands with turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, along with opportunities to experience rich cultural heritage and Polynesian culture.

When you visit French Polynesia, you'll find various boat rental options for different experience levels. The Society Islands offer excellent year-round sailing conditions, thanks to calm seas and steady trade winds. Yacht charter options accommodate different preferences and budgets. The islands offer access to secluded lagoons, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters.

Sailing charter options in French Polynesia

French Polynesia offers two main options of sailboat charter in French Polynesia

  1. The bareboat charter option is ideal for experienced sailors who want to navigate independently through the French Polynesian islands, giving you the freedom to explore with your yacht. This option lets you set sail on your schedule, visiting secluded motu and pristine lagoons without needing a captain.
  2. Crewed yachts provide professional navigation assistance through the Society Archipelago. A qualified captain handles the technical aspects while you focus on the sailing experience. This option suits those less familiar with Pacific Ocean conditions or those wanting a more relaxed, romantic getaway.

This flexibility allows travelers to choose the sailing style that best fits their comfort level, whether it's the thrill of captaining your route or the ease of relaxing while an expert guides the way.

License requirements for sailing in French Polynesia

Proper certification is required for sailing in French Polynesia. You need an International Certificate of Competence or equivalent sailing license for bareboat charter. The calm waters and good sailing conditions make these islands suitable for sailors with moderate experience, though local knowledge helps when moving between neighboring islands.

Sailboat rental costs in French Polynesia

Sailboat rental costs vary based on the duration of your trip, the season, and the type of boat you choose. Costs increase during peak season due to higher demand. Tahiti yacht charter rates range from moderate to premium pricing, reflecting the destination's remote location compared to other sailing areas like South America. Factor in fuel, provisioning, and marina fees when planning your sailing vacation budget.

Top destinations and sailing routes in French Polynesia

The Leeward Islands provide popular sailing routes in the South Pacific. Popular sailing routes include island-hopping between landscapes of dramatic mountains, lush rainforests, and postcard-worthy white sand beaches.

Each island has different features, from vanilla plantations to extinct volcanoes, plus diverse local flora that varies across other islands in the archipelago. Some areas are known as vanilla island locations due to their extensive plantations, providing variety for all the sailing enthusiasts during their trip.

Explore Tahiti: the largest island in French Polynesia

The main island and largest island in French Polynesia is Tahiti, which serves as the primary entry point. Tahiti offers good provisioning facilities and functions as the main charter base.

The island has lush valleys, vanilla plantations, and Ha'amene Bay, where you can experience Polynesian culture. Browse Tahiti's lively markets for fresh seafood and traditional dishes before sailing to more remote islands.

Island hop to Bora Bora and the Leeward Islands

The most famous island in the group is Bora Bora, which features a turquoise lagoon and palm trees. Bora Bora also offers world-class scuba diving among vibrant reefs teeming with marine life. The surrounding pristine lagoons have tranquil waters suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

Many locations require you to tender ashore from your yacht to reach the best beaches and restaurants. You can try traditional Polynesian oven-prepared meals that include coconut milk and delicious food with local ingredients prepared by residents.

Planning your sailing vacation to French Polynesia

Planning is key to making the most of your sailing trip in French Polynesia. Consider trade wind patterns, weather seasons, and distances between islands when creating your itinerary. Most Tahiti yacht charter trips begin in Papeete, making it convenient to start your adventure.

The option to rent a sailboat in Tahiti is typically provided with detailed briefings about local conditions and regulations. Pack suitable clothing for tropical conditions and respect local customs. The lush landscapes provide opportunities to experience authentic Polynesian cuisine and cultural traditions for sailors looking to explore this South Pacific destination.
